The Legacy of George Washington Carver

When I was not quite ten years old, I received a book that deeply influenced me: A Weed Is A Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver, written and illustrated by Aliki. There was so much that I gathered from that picture book, about a curious, humble scientist and inventor with outstanding strength of character. In his lifetime (1860-1943), George Washington Carver experienced the tremendous challenges of slavery, poverty and the loss of his parents. Still, he became an inspiring and successful individual who advanced the lives of many.

Last week we received an email from one of our partner families asking us to help them understand “why is the price of local, organic milk so high?”

At Farmers To You we provide your comments and questions directly to the farmers and producers, so we reached out to Larson Farm and Creamery for more information and we would like to share this exchange with you.

I have a confession to make. Sometimes I can take the incredible bounty of our farmers and small producers for granted. This is not because I don’t understand the time and labor spent growing food, raising animals or stirring together ingredients for bread or pies. The reason could be because this time of year there is an astounding volume of cherry tomatoes, summer squash, kale and other greens coming through our Farmers To You hub each week.

Donating Food, Feeding Our Neighbors

Many of us are concerned about our neighbors, in particular the most vulnerable members of our community, and we seek ways to help those who are food insecure. Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief and food rescue organization, reports that nearly 100 percent of food banks are serving more people in need than usual during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help ease this burden, Farmers To You wants to remind you of ways you can partner with us to meet the needs of people who need food around our hub in central Vermont
