Back in the day, it was easier for us to personally know our grocers and food providers. I was lucky enough to grow up in a family steeped in food knowledge. My fraternal grandfather was a produce merchant at the Faneuil Hall Marketplace for 60 years. On the other hand, my maternal grandfather would always take me shopping at Blatzos’ Market. It was here that I would receive a lecture from Mr. Blatzos personally each week about how to tell if the fruit was fresh and well grown. The pay off at the end of listening to him were the samples of everything, a fair trade off.
During that time, when I was young, we trusted our local grocers to give us the behind the scenes scoop that led us to buy the healthiest and freshest food. Unfortunately, that is rarely the case these days.
As a throwback to the simpler times, Farmers To You is attempting to regain this relationship based on trust with you. We even have a new saying that we use with this in mind at Farmers To You – Food You Love From Farmers You Trust!
With this in mind, I hope to take on Mr. Blatzos’ role and share some of our wisdom with you about how we select the farmers and producers who grow and make your food each week. Instead of a lecture and a free food sample afterward I hope to make our interaction more precise.
If you have not already seen it, we have created a guide to support you when you are buying your food from places other than Farmers To You. Please follow this link to our new Farmers To You: Pocket Guide. We hope it helps you make thoughtful choices about what you eat, where it comes from, who grows it and how it is grown. This guide has simple, but powerful, questions you can ask to learn more about your food before you buy it and share it with your family and loved ones.
Thank you for the care that goes into your food choices,
Greg
