Ashmead's Kernel Apple - EcoApple Certified

Ashmead's Kernel has a fine grain flesh and is a "high acid, high sugar" apple like a Reinette. A smaller, golden russeted apple often with a red cheek, and tastes like a crunchy lemon when it's first picked and then the flavor mellows as the sugars develop.

Storage Tips

Store in a paper bag in the refrigerator.

These are the best! Wish they were available all the time.

These are my favorite apple. Ever. I've truly enjoyed many of the heirloom varieties I've been able to try through FTY, but this is the best as far as I'm concerned. Sweet, tart, and complex in flavor. I prefer them in the first 5 days or so, when they're at their most tart. My family and I tend to just eat them fresh and on their own, though I've no doubt they'd be good in baking, juicing, or paired with cheese.

Amazing juice apple! Juiced this weekend. Only wish I could buy bushels to make cider!

Thanks for including specific notes "high acid, high sugar". This make my apple selection much easier.

Champlain Orchards, Shoreham, VT

Bill and Andrea at Champlain Orchards are committed to ecological practices and are Eco-Apple certified. Due to the challenges of our Northeast climate, organic certification of apples is incredibly difficult. Their apples are never sprayed; only in the flowering stage are the trees treated using Integrated Pest Management to cut down on the risk of scab. No chemical pesticides are used on the orchards.
