Organic Fig Anise Bread

1 lb loaf
$17.98

Red Hen Bakery makes this bread from their Cyrus Pringle dough and adds figs and anise. Sweet and flavorful, this is a special treat.

Ingredients
VT-grown unbleached wheat flour from Nitty Gritty Grains*, water, Vermont-grown whole wheat flour from Gleason Grains*, figs, anise, salt, yeast. *Certified Organic
Storage Tips

Store this bread in a paper bag and keep at room temperature for best flavor and texture. Best enjoyed within a couple of days.

Red Hen Baking Co., Middlesex, VT

Simple food made with excellent ingredients is what makes this loaf so delicious.
The Cyrus Pringle dough is milder than Red Hen's purely naturally-leavened breads but still has a chewy texture and light wheaty flavor, and carries the flavors of fig and anise well. It is made entirely with VT-grown wheat, a miracle that was literally years in the making. Truly a regional loaf, using only organic wheat flour grown in VT, this bread is named after Vermont botanist and wheat breeder Cyrus Pringle (1838-1911).
Excellent for breakfast or afternoon snack as toast, or plain with a healthy slab of butter. Also pairs well with strong cheeses.

Perfection. Just a little sweet. Still very hearty.

This bread is *delicious*, unfortunately small, and a $4 mark-up from buying directly from the bakery in VT. Other breads from the same bakery are marked up $1-2. My rating for the bread is 5/5, but the almost double the price mark up seems oddly steep.

Tasty loaf with plenty of figs and just the right amount of anise. It also as a satisfyingly chewy texture and is great toasted. My one constructive comment is I was a bit surprised by the size; it was a bit smaller than I expected.

I tried this bread twice and was disappointed both times. Neither loaf had that many figs--at least based on other fruit breads I have purchased and the various reviews. The bread itself was good--nice chewy texture--but don't expect more than one bit of dried fig per slice.

Yes, the loaf really does have that many figs in it! All that fruit makes it expensive, but it's a wonderful treat, especially toasted.
